Our lineage

4th-generation Shotokan, rooted in the lineage of Sensei James Yabe

At Kombat Karate, we bring a family-focused, 4th-generation traditional Shotokan experience to Long Beach, rooted in the lineage of Sensei James Yabe. As a locally owned dojo led by Sensei Ryan and Senpai Nancy, our decades of certified Shotokan training create more than strong technique — we develop confident, disciplined students who grow stronger on and off the mat.

Sensei Ryan trained directly under renowned Shotokan instructor Sensei James Yabe and is currently the only black belt in his class to earn that certification. Those roots shape how every class here is taught — traditional standards, honest corrections and technique that holds up.

We are honored and privileged to be a dojo that continues to train underneath Sensei James Yabe — and proud that our students learn directly from that same lineage every time they step on the mat.

Traditional standards, passed down generation to generation.

Phenomenal place, one of the best dojos I've trained at. Sensei Ryan makes sure you understand what you're learning and, more importantly, how to apply it. Definitely would recommend to a friend.
