What Is Shotokan Karate? History, Training and Why It Still Works
5 min read · Long Beach, CA
Shotokan is one of the most widely practiced karate styles in the world. It's known for deep stances, strong linear techniques and a demanding emphasis on precision.
A short history
Shotokan developed from the teachings of Gichin Funakoshi, who brought karate from Okinawa to mainland Japan in the early 20th century. The name comes from his pen name, 'Shoto.'
The three pillars: kihon, kata, kumite
- Kihon — fundamentals: stances, blocks, punches and kicks
- Kata — prearranged forms that preserve techniques and principles
- Kumite — sparring, from controlled drills to free exchange
Why lineage matters
Traditional karate is passed from teacher to student. At Kombat Karate, our training follows the lineage of Sensei James Yabe, and we are honored to continue training under him.
